I think I figured out why I did the join wrong. I was trying to join like a typical knit in the round project. But it's not in the round. It's in the spiral. Which was just far enough off to mess me up. 
However, I have recovered from that little stumble and will continue on. Hopefully soon there will be progress pics that look a little more tank-top-like and less blob-like.
